The Pros and Cons of University Divestments – Excalibur, York University’s Community Newspaper

CURI Chair Omar Dominguez responds to an interview with Excalibur, a York University community newspaper on CURI’s views on the Students Against Israel Apartheid (SAIA) Divestment Campaign. “Issues like military spending are bound to be controversial,” he said. “But if you divest from these companies, it really leaves you out of an opportunity to negotiate with the companies and try to address your concerns.” Nevertheless, Dominguez appreciated SAIA’s efforts to include students in these discussions. An Education in Green Investing – Globe and Mail

Globe and Mail-April 26- Erin Millar- “While Canadian universities are intellectual leaders on sustainability, they are lagging behind their American and European counterparts when it comes to incorporating environmental and social concerns into their own investments, according to a new coalition.”

“Greening endowments and pension funds could be a smart financial move, according to a major report published in February by the global investment banker Mercer. The report, which looked at how climate change will affect institutional portfolios, estimated that uncertainty about climate change policy could represent up to 10 per cent of the overall risk to portfolios over the next 20 years.” Read more
